Those
who glance into Zelli are blown away at their discovery. Forget
the common prejudice that porcelain personifies simpering shepherdesses
and sentimental nick knacks. Everything at Zelli is an exquisite
work of art.
Every
piece is hand made out of purest porcelain. Many from over a hundred
different moulds that are then fettled, glazed and fired several
nail-biting times. The diversity on display is simply astounding.
Yes, traditional Dresden shepherdesses are on display, but so are
more contemporary pieces - crouching tigers, art nouveau ladies,
white Meissen candlesnuffers and state-of-the-art abstract sculptures.
Zelli
is the only gallery in the world to display work from all six porcelain
manufacturers - there is a particularly close relationship with
Meissen.
Throughout
the year there are events, exhibitions and lectures to encourage
and promote a wider appreciation of ornamental porcelain –
a fine art sidelined by fashion since the glamour days of the 1930s
and now making a massive come back.
Jubilee
Award becomes an Institution
For our 50th anniversary in 2002, we held a figurative porcelain
competition. Our aim was to woo ceramic artists away from
pots and bowls and into sculpture. In its 18th century heyday,
quality English porcelain was a match for the German. We hope,
with encouragement, it can be so again.
Our
chosen theme, for interpretation in porcelain, was ‘Porcelain
is frozen music’ (A. Schopenhauer). The results were
outstanding. Many artists picked up porcelain for the first
time and managed to create wonderful forms from this ancient
and responsive material.
Thirty
works were shortlisted and more than half sold at exhibition
– a real testament to their achievement.”

History
Many of you have asked about the history of Zelli. We actually started
life as a chocolate shop. Victor and Pearl Zelli had taken a short
lease in the Burlington Arcade when a chance request from a customer
was to change their lives.
At the time, hardly any fine porcelain was available in this country.
Most manufactories were and still are based in Germany. One day
a customer happened to ask Victor (who was brought up in Berlin
and a fluent German speaker) if he would help him to obtain a Rosenthal
porcelain sea lion. Victor obliged and the resulting £4.16.0
in the till, rather than the customary 1/3d for humbugs or truffles,
opened his eyes to the potential of re-introducing European porcelain
back to Britain.
Over
the next 38 years, Zelli's stock grew into a unique showcase for
the finest Continental manufactories as well as sculptures by countless
individual artists..
When
I joined Mr. Zelli in l967 my only previous experience was as a
Wimpy waitress. Since Victor's was in the hotel trade, our early
discussions were as much about portion control as porcelain.
By
l990, the need for more display space resulted in our move to Dover
Street. Victor took the opportunity to retire and I bought the business
from him.
A series
of events both local (a massive burglary on day one) and international
(uncertainty of supplies following the re-unification of Germany
and the devaluation of the pound) amongst others made the first
few years in Dover Street extremely difficult. However, since then
Zelli has gone from strength to strength, as has my determination
to offer customers the very finest of today's ornamental porcelain
- whether of traditional or contemporary design.
We
have now expanded to more suitable premises in Marylebone. Here
we will have a permanent exhibition for Zelli Award exhibitors and
a tableware gallery.
